The University of North Carolina at Pembroke, also referred to as simply UNCP or UNC Pembroke, is a public, co-educational, historically American Indian liberal arts university in the town of Pembroke, which is situated in Robeson County, in the US state of North Carolina, having a population estimated at a number of nearly 2400 inhabitants, during the 2000 census.
UNC Pembroke was was officially established in 1887, and it is a master's level degree-granting university, one of the 17 schools that comprise the University of North Carolina system. It official name was adopted in July, 1996, and it first master's degree program was implemented in 1978.
Today, UNCP offers its students a total of 41 bachelor's and 17 master's degrees, through its College of Arts and Sciences along with the Schools of Business, Education, and Graduate Studies.
UNC Pembroke's athletic teams call themselves the Braves, and they compete in NCAA Division II, in the Peach Belt Conference, for all 16 sports, except football and wrestling, in which they compete independently.
Their distinctive colors are black and gold, and their mascot is the Red-Tailed Hawk.
